Optional Excursion to Okeechobee

Friday-Saturday, August 26-27, 2016

For those delegates who can extend their stay for an extra day, the B16 organizing committee is offering an excursion to Okeechobee in central Florida to visit the WRMI transmitter site -- the largest privately-owned shortwave transmitter facility in the Western Hemisphere.

Transportation will be provided after lunch on Friday from the Hilton Hotel in Miami to the WRMI transmitter site in Okeechobee, which will take a little more than two and one-half hours. There will be a site tour, followed by a barbecue dinner on-site featuring traditional Southern U.S. cuisine.

Overnight accommodation will be at the Holiday Inn Express hotel in Okeechobee, at each participant’s expense. The hotel has free wifi, a swimming pool, spa, gymnasium and breakfast room with free hot breakfast. The price is $83.00 plus local taxes of 10%. You can e-mail, fax or call the hotel and ask for the 'Radio Miami rate'. Here are the hotel contact details:

On Saturday morning, after breakfast at the hotel, participants will be taken on a bus tour of the Okeechobee area, visiting Lake Okeechobee (one of the largest freshwater lakes in North America) and other sites as time allows, with an opportunity to see alligators, birds and other local flora and fauna. A stop will be made for lunch (at participants’ expense) en route back to Miami. We will return to Miami around 1700 hours (at Miami International Airport) on Saturday, where delegates may take an evening flight home or stay on in Miami if they wish.

Transportation and tours for this excursion will be provided free of charge, as well as the Friday dinner. Breakfast on Saturday is included in the hotel rate. Delegates will need to pay for their own hotel room on Friday night and for lunch on Saturday.

Some details of the excursion are subject to change due to weather and operational factors.
